Jason took a sip of his water, and then got serious.

“Henderson Motorsports wants to sign you to a contract,” he said.

“Really?!?

He nodded. “Yeah, really.” Jason took another sip, and their waiter discreetly entered the room.

“Mr. Henderson said something about the contract having something to do with the outcome of tomorrow's audition race, but I happen to know for sure that that's nonsense,” he explained.

Shondra tilted her head, slightly confused. “I'm afraid you're gonna have to explain that one to me,” she said.

Jason chuckled slightly. “Not a problem,” he said. “I'd be confused, too.”

Before he could explain, though, the waiter approached, and Shondra realized that with all the fuss about the contract she hadn't had a chance to look at the menu.

Fortunately for her, though, Jason was good at chivalry, and he noticed her bewilderment immediately.

“Want me to order for us?” he asked. “Not something I'd normally do, but under the circumstances it might make things easier.”

“Please do,” Shondra said, feeling a blush of relief.

Jason did the ordering, and as she watched him Shondra realized how smooth and self-assured he was, and how much of a country girl she was. Man, she sure had a long way to go to be able get by in this world.

He ordered steak, salmon and soft-shelled crabs, along with a couple of appetizers. The waiter explained that the soft-shelled crabs were a local delicacy, and Shondra loved seafood, so she couldn't wait for that, especially when she realized how hungry she was.

The waiter left, and Shondra politely downed some of her own water, and then reached for the basket of bread that was delicately covered with a napkin. It was hot and obviously freshly baked, and as she sliced off a piece and buttered it, reminding herself to be ladylike and not start wolfing it down.

“A little hungry there, huh?” Jason kidded, seeing her urgency.

“Yeah, just a bit,” she replied, then shook her head. “Been a long day, to be honest.”

“I understand completely,” he said. “I’m always starving after a big wreck, to be honest.”

At first Shondra thought he was joshing her, but then she realized that there was a shot of truth to what he'd just said. He took a piece of bread and began to butter it, and Shondra had the feeling that he was doing that as much out of politeness as anything else.

“So tell me about this contract thing,” she said after a couple of quick bites. “You know I'm dying to know.”

“Of course,” he said, nodding as he took a sip of water to wash the bread down. “I would be, too.”

He glanced toward the door to make sure the waiter wasn't coming back right away, and then continued.

“Mr. Henderson always plays coy when it comes to talking about contracts and deals and all that,” Jason began. “It's just kind of his way of doing things.”

Shondra nodded. “I'm OK with that so far...”

“But when he gets this far on things, it’s basically a total lock,” he added. “I can tell you that for sure.
